Dolomites

We spent some time in the Dolomites (a mountain range in northeast Italy) in 2024. To say these mountains are impressive is a massive understatement.

We started our journey in Bologna, then went to Cortina d'Ampezzo. From there, we spent a couple of days in Ortisei, and then a couple more in Madonna di Campiglio, before ending the trip in Milan.

The jagged peaks of the Dolomites are eye-popping, the hikes show something new and amazing at every turn, the food and drink are wonderful, and the people are very friendly. The area will host the XXV Olympic Winter Games in February, 2026.

The jagged peaks of the Dolomites are incredible, and different views present vastly different scenes.
This is a photo of Cinque Torri, which translates to "Five Towers." (Yes, it appears there are six.)
These are the peaks of the Brenta group of the Dolomites.
One of the many stunning wildflowers growing in the area
If you look closely, you can see a blue speck toward the upper-middle of the photo, and a red speck toward the lower-right part. These are people climbing this rock. It was quite fascinating to watch.
Just a typical gorgeous mountain scene

Sunny days are amazing in the Dolomites, and I think cloudy days are just as cool.
Cowbells are found around the necks of many animals in these parts. At this station, a person can play songs on the cowbells. You are even provided with sheet music.
There was snow on many of the mountains, in mid-June.
I liked the positioning of this church, on the way from Bologna to Cortina.
This is a picture of Lago di Braies. The hike around the lake is about two miles, flat, and gorgeous.
Parasailing in the Dolomites... not a bad gig (I took the photo with my feet firmly on the ground)
The pyramidal peak with snow on it, to the right of the middle of the pic, is Cima Margherita.
There's something really cool about mountain peaks surrounded by clouds.
We didn't see a lot of wildlife on this trip, but I thought this bird was fun to watch.
This view is from one of the hikes out of Ortisei.
Another of the beautiful wildflowers growing in the area
I thought the striped look of the snow on these mountains was particularly eye-catching.
I could stare at this mountain for hours... and I have.
I know I've mentioned "beautiful jagged peaks" a few times on this page, but the phrase certainly fits.
This is a photo of the Duomo di Milano. Construction on this church started in 1386 and was finished in 1965. That's not a typo.
We called this formation "Dragon Wings," and couldn't decide whether they resembled Figment's or Toothless' wings.
It's easy to see how this area could host an Olympic Winter Games.
One of the many small cities sprinkled throughout the area, with incredible views
I liked the mysterious-looking nature of this photo.
We saw these cows, and many others, on a hike from Ortisei.
In the lower-left part of this photo is a refugio, a hut at which a person can relax, eat, drink, enjoy amazing views, and often spend a night or two.
This is the Fontana di Nettuno ("Fountain of Neptune"), found in Bologna.
Views like this seem to appear everywhere a person turns in the Dolomites.
